Teenagers should maybe spend more time on the internet?
NYT Wednesday had a story about how teenagers spending time on the internet is not a bad thing:
Mimi Ito, lead researcher on the study, Living and Learning With New Media” says to the NYC:
“…their participation is giving them the technological skills and literacy they need to succeed in the contemporary world. Theyre learning how to get along with others, how to manage a public identity, how to create a home page.”
And on the same line of thought I heard a lecture yesterday (at the conference “Looking for Information” at the Danish Library School) about Swedish Lunarstorm and how teenagers in that social network learn about their own identity and get new social skills.
One of the teenagers interviewed in NYT says that “Its not an obsession; its a necessity.” – and isn’t that how many of us feel about the tools we use to work together or socialize on the internet? :-)
So maybe teenagers should spend MORE time on the internet?
Full report on the digital youth research is here (22 different case studies and 28 researchers for the last 3 years).
