Implement user value - not technology
In the nineties there was a saying, that choosing blue (i.e IBM) wouldn´t get the IT manager fired. Meaning that take a safe choice, non regarding cost benefit. I have a feeling that many organisations, feel the same about Microsoft (MS). Jump on the sales force – that MS is the answer to solve all your software problems. In many cases it gives meaning to choose MS, and they have designed a very smart license solution, so it makes sense to continue using MS for every need.
I experience a huge problem thought with Sharepoint/Moss. Moss promises organization a wide range of tools – they even call them social. When an organisation starts using them, they will experience that the tools will not provide the value they were intended, whether it is blogs, wikis etc. And usability is non present witch makes education necessary. The result of this is that the tools don´t get anchored, and ROI is a depressing exercise.
MOSS implementations therefor in general turns out to be extremely expensive initially and henceforward. So in stead of implementing user value, they implement technology, where inconvenience overshadows the benefits. If you want users to use new tools, they have to be designed after their behavior, rather than forcing them to obey standard technology - this is old news but it still hasn´t penetrated the decision makers, probably because they do not understand the implications, before it is to late.
